The principal activity of Ian Mosey (Livestock) Ltd is finishing pigs for the UK pork industry. The majority of these pigs are reared and finished on third party Bed & Breakfast farms across the north of England. The pigs are transported using its’ own fleet of HGV vehicles. The business also operates two pig breeding herds which supply some of the piglets for the finishing operation.
Key responsibilities:
As a Fieldsman you will be assigned a group of Bed and Breakfast pig farms in Yorkshire to manage and your responsibilities will include:
- Building and developing strong working relationships with B&B farming partners and their unit managers to ensure best husbandry practice, high welfare standards and production efficiency are being reached. You will become their first port of call for any queries or issues that arise.
- Regularly visit assigned farms, monitoring all aspects of pig husbandry and performance including pig health, welfare, housing, cleanliness, and biosecurity whilst encouraging the farmer to ensure improvements are made where necessary.
- Providing training to farmers to enable them to flag issues at the earliest opportunity which in turn allows you to ensure prompt action is taken.
- You will be required to understand the different health status of the piglet supply base, how they should be managed and how they perform whilst continuously feeding back relevant information to the management and planning team.
- You will be responsible for the selection of pigs for slaughter on your assigned farms. This includes reporting numbers to the planning team each week and physically selecting these pigs for each load of slaughter pigs.
- You are required to assist with sorting pigs for slaughter and assist the haulage team in loading and unloading pigs.
- As piglets arrive on farm you will assist with accurately counting the piglets off the wagon, vaccinating and split sexing them when required.
- When on-boarding new B&B farms, you will be responsible for introducing the unit manager to the Ian Mosey system and deliver training in all aspects of pig husbandry.
- You will be responsible for keeping accurate records of medication usage and reporting a range of information to the planning and management team in line with the Ian Mosey systems.
- You will be working in a close-knit team – supporting each other to achieve a common goal is essential.
